Printing On The Statistics Network
Requirements
In order to print to the Statistics or CSSS printers you need to either be:
- Connected via ethernet to the Padelford network
- Connected via wireless inside Padelford Hall
You will also need to have a Statistics Computing Account.
Instructions
Part of the Domain (Stat/CSSS Desktops)
Printers should be automatically added -- however, should you need to add a printer manually:
- Go to "Start" -> "Devices & Printers"
- Click "Add a Printer"
- Select "Next" then select "A network printer, wireless or bluetooth printer"
- Select the printer you want to add, and click next.
- If you do not see a list of Stat printers when you click find, click "The printer that I want isn't listed"
- Select "Find a printer in the directory"
- Enter any criteria to search on, or leave all fields blank to search for all printers
- Double click the printer in the list that you want to install
Outside of the Domain (Laptops/Visiting Machines)
- Open up My Computer and in the address bar put
\\stat-print.stat.washington.edu
- This should pop up a login box. Use your UW NetID login with "NETID\" added before your username, e.g.: User Name:
NETID\krisshaw
- Double click the printer you wish to use (see the list below for details)
- The print driver will automatically install and the appropriate driver will be downloaded.
If you are setting up stat-copier, stat-color, csss-copier, and/or csss-color:
- Download and Install the MAC Ricoh IM C4510/C3510 Printing Drivers. Double Click on the downloaded file and double click once more on drive package and complete the install.
If you have never connected to an HP Printer before, you may need to download the HP Printer Drivers for macOS.
Note
The process for older versions of macOS may differ from the process listed below, and some versions may not be able to print to the department printer server at all. In that case, we recommend an upgrade to the latest macOS (which is free) for both updated printing and ongoing security updates (for non UW-owned laptops, we recommend taking the system to the Apple Store for the upgrade).
For stat-copier, stat-color, csss-copier, and csss-color:
After installing the drivers above, run the following commands by opening Terminal (COMMAND+SPACE, Terminal) for each printer desired.
Note
If you are prompted for a password when running the first "sudo" command, enter your password for your local user account on your computer.
Click the symbol at the right of each line to copy it to your clipboard.
cd /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/
sudo curl -O https://sites.stat.washington.edu/printers/osx/stat_copier.ppd

For all other printers:
- Open the System Preferences then the Printers menu
- Click on the + to add a printer
- Hold the Control key while clicking the “Add Printer” toolbar, then choose "Customize Toolbar" from the drop down menu that appears.
- Drag the Advanced (gear) icon to the toolbar. Note: Drag the icon to the toolbar above, not the example toolbar below
- Click Done.
- Click the Advanced icon that was added to the toolbar.
- Choose 'Windows printer via spools' from the Type drop-down menu.
In the url field, use the following :
smb://stat-printserv.stat.washington.edu/printer-name
- Example:
smb://stat-printserv.stat.washington.edu/stat-copier
- Example:
-
Fill in the appropriate Name and Location (I recommend changing the default name of the printer)
-
For stat-copier under "Use:"
- Select "Select Software
- In the filter box type “7556”, and select “Xerox WC 7556, 3.52.0”.
-
For the csss-copier (Ricoh):
- Download and install the macOS Ricoh drivers as described above
- Under “Use:”
- Select “Select Software”
- In the filter box type “4505ex”, and select “Ricoh MP C4504ex”.
When you print the first time you may be asked to authenticate:
- For Name, use
<your UW NETID>@netid.washington.edu
(e.g.krisshaw@netid.washington.edu
) and provide your UW NetID password - You will likely want to select the option to remember your password so that you do not have to re-enter it in the future (if you do, you should only need to do it once and it will remember it for all of the printers).
Note
If the print queue window just says “Hold For Authentication”, and the login window doesn't appear, this is probably due to a bad password saved in your Keychain. Open Keychain, search for the printer (e.g. “stat-copier”), and then delete any saved passwords. It should prompt you for a password next time.
Statistics department issued Linux desktops have printing configured automatically. If you're having trouble printing from a Stat Linux desktop, please email help@stat.washington.edu.
Printing on personal Linux machines is currently not supported, due to incompatibilities with the printing server's NetID authentication system.
